"Strange Fruit" is a B-side from Tori Amos's 1994 album Under the Pink.
Background[]
"Strange Fruit" was written by Lewis Allen and released by Billie Holiday as a single in 1939. Amos's cover was released on the "Cornflake Girl" UK Limited Edition single alongside renditions of "A Case of You" and "If 6 Was 9".[1]
Her rendition of "Strange Fruit" was informed by Amos's early years in the Southern part of the United States, where both she and her Cherokee grandfather deeply experienced "many forms of racial hatred". Amos recorded the song at 5:30 in the morning to have "a certain quality" to her voice.[2]
