Critical reception and reaction Edit

Joe Vallese of PopMatters noted that Tori's cover arguably "sparked the dialogue surrounding [her] in 1992 and expedited the “love her or hate her” branding."

Live performances Edit

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" was first performed during the 1992 Little Earthquakes Tour and has been played on almost all of her tours since.[1]

Two days after Cobain committed suicide in 1994, Tori performed "American Pie" by Don McLean and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" together in Dublin, "because American Pie is what I heard over and over in my head the night he killed himself." As Tori began to play "American Pie" to an audience of 2,500, she commented that "it started like a whisper, and then in perfect pitch, in perfect rhythm, very softly, they all sang American Pie with me."

A live performance of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is included on Live at Montreux.
