"Sister Janet" is a B-side from Tori Amos's 1994 album Under the Pink.

Background Edit

Tori submitted "Sister Janet" to the Library of Congress for copyright in October 1993 along with many other songs from the Under the Pink era.[1]

The song was released as a B-side on "Cornflake Girl" singles in Australia, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom in January 1994, and as a B-side to "God" and "Cornflake Girl" in the US in February and May 1994.

Reception Edit

"Sister Janet" has been praised as one of Amos' most accomplished B-sides, variously called "exquisite",[2] "classic Amos",[3] and "representative of [her] golden period".[4]

In 2012, Joe Vallese of PopMatters named "Sister Janet" one of Tori's best non-album tracks, calling the song "a prime example of Amos’ uncanny ability to weave together strange, conflicting images ... and deliver them with such beauty and conviction, we needn’t worry about sense-making."[5]

In 2014, Polari Magazine's Andrew Darley similarly noted that the song demonstrates the "sense of connectedness and storytelling ... embodied in [Amos's] work", singling out the mention of Marianne and the lyrics' exploration of religious themes.[6]

Remastered versions Edit

Remastered versions of "Sister Janet" were included on Disc E of the 2006 boxset A Piano: The Collection and the 2015 reissue of Under the Pink.

Live performances Edit

"Sister Janet" was first performed live during the 1994 Under the Pink Tour and has been played solo on almost all of Tori's tours since.[7]

A live performance of "Sister Janet" was included on Legs & Boots.
