Night of Hunters is the twelfth studio album by American singer-songwriter Tori Amos. It was released on September 19, 2011 in the United Kingdom and September 20 in the United States by Deutsche Grammophon.

Comprised of variations on works by classical music composers, Night of Hunters is a song cycle in which a woman named tori is guided by a mythical creature named Annabelle into the past, where she encounters other characters and a plot to steal childrens' dreams. Annabelle was portrayed by Amos' daughter Natashya Hawley; the two had previously collaborated on Amos' 2009 seasonal album Midwinter Graces.

Amos was approached to do the album by Deutsche Grammophon musicologist Dr. Alexander Buhr.

Amos selected the pieces to do variations on, with arrangements contributed by longtime collaborator John Philip Shenale. A variety of classical musicians provided instrumentation; these included the Polish Apollon Musagete Quartet, who Amos performed with on her 2011 Night of Hunters Tour.

Background[]

Amos was approached to compose Night of Hunters by Dr. Alexander Buhr, a musicologist at Deutsche Grammophon.

Recording[]

Night of Hunters was entirely recorded at Martian Engineering in Cornwall, England, at which many of Amos' previous albums had been recorded. Amos' vocals and piano were recorded first, a process only involving Amos, her husband and sound engineer Mark Hawley and sound engineer Marcel van Limbeek, "whereby..." (PopMatters).

Amos worked extensively with her daughter to properly convey Annabelle.
