From the Choirgirl Hotel is the fourth solo studio album by American singer-songwriter Tori Amos. It was released on May 4, 1998 in the United Kingdom by East West Records and on May 5, 1998 by Atlantic Records in the United States.

The album was largely inspired by a miscarriage Amos experienced in December 1996 and her engagement to partner Mark Hawley in early 1997.

From the Choirgirl Hotel marked the first time Amos recorded with a full band, including drummer Matt Chamberlain and longtime guitarist Steve Caton.

From the Choirgirl Hotel was preceded by the release of lead single "Spark". The second single, "Jackie's Strength", was released only in the United States.

Background Edit

The title of the album was inspired by Amos viewing each song on the record individually as opposed to the tracks on her previous album Boys for Pele:

This record’s called From the Choirgirl Hotel so you don’t know if I’m reporting from it or sending dispatches - it changes. Each song is an individual. It’s not like the last record - that was like a journey into the underworld of her psyche. This isn’t like that - some are by the pool having a margarita, some are up in suite 17 just trying on each other’s shoes, one is having her own fantasy on the phone downstairs... I don’t know what they get up to - whether they’re a troupe and they sing together or they work together - but they don’t depend on each other to survive at all. (Attitude UK May 1998)
